Understanding FD vs. RD
Both are incredibly safe, guaranteed-return investment vehicles, but they work slightly differently.
Fixed Deposit (FD)
You invest a lumpsum amount once for a fixed period. The bank pays you a guaranteed interest rate. It is ideal if you have a large amount of savings ready to invest today.
Recurring Deposit (RD)
You invest a fixed amount every month for a fixed period. It is ideal for salaried individuals who want to build a large corpus slowly over time.
Are they safe?
Yes! In India, FDs and RDs offered by scheduled banks are insured up to ₹5 Lakhs by the DICGC (a subsidiary of the RBI), making them one of the safest investments available.
How does compounding work?
Most banks compound interest Quarterly. This means every 3 months, the interest you earned is added to your principal, and then you earn interest on that new, larger amount!
