How to Calculate Percentages
Percentages are used everywhere, from discounts in stores to interest rates at banks. Our tool makes it easy, but here's how the math works behind the scenes.
Finding X% of Y
Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing it by 100, then multiply by the total amount.
Example: 20% of 150 = (20 / 100) × 150 = 30.
Finding what % X is of Y
Divide the partial amount by the total amount, then multiply by 100.
Example: 30 is what % of 150? (30 / 150) × 100 = 20%.
Calculating Percentage Change
Find the difference between the two numbers, divide by the original number, and multiply by 100.
Example: Increase from 100 to 150: ((150 - 100) / 100) × 100 = 50% increase.
